Healing Art Gallery
The Healing Art Gallery at OKCIC is the result of an innovative fusion of art, healing, and fundraising. The project promotes and uses the art of the Urban 5, a group of local Native American artists who graduated from the University of Oklahoma, and whose work has captured national attention.

The art work is displayed in the gallery and therapy rooms at the OKCIC where it contributes to a beautiful and calming atmosphere. Therapists make use of the art works in reaching out to patients. They may ask patients to interpret the art, or to give names to the art works, and to compare their interpretations to others in group sessions. It has been found that using the art work helps therapists and patients bridge gaps more quickly, and come to deeper understanding and insights of issues common to the Native American community. The work is often used as an example, to encourage patients to explore their feelings and express themselves through art.

Further the art work provides positive visual proof of talent, ability and success, which all Native Americans can take pride in.

The art does far more than beautify the clinic and therapy rooms, through collaboration with the clinic the art of the Urban 5 is available for sale and a percentage of the funds benefit the clinic. This allows all art purchases to be tax deductible; the clinic, artists, and community all benefit from this innovative project. It’s about helping each other, reclaiming traditions and cultural heritage, and celebrating the best of the Native American spirit.

The Healing Art Gallery promotes recovery and health through the sharing of art and
common experience.
