Across the Mountains Series
Modern culture presents a host of challenges and stresses for the urban Native American community. While urban life is filled with opportunities, pitfalls abound. Many families find themselves feeling adrift, far from their familiar traditional standards and far from the extended family that supported and reinforced their values. Their children seem to live in another world, with priorities and values their parents struggle to understand. The gap only widens as children become teens and adapt the attitudes of the larger population, seeing little to value in their parents’ way of life.

Sometimes, to find one’s way home, to reunite the family, to remind youth of their own value and seeing little value in our people, we must look far Across the Mountains.

This monthly series is a community gathering for families and youth from ages 10 to 17 years old. It is a lecture series, where topics important to parents and youth are presented for open discussion. It is a learning opportunity, where parents and teens come together, as they begin to understand another point of view. It is an exchange of ideas, where we voice our concerns and experiences. Finally it is a gathering, with a shared meal of pizza and soft drinks, where friends and family can re-unite and share news.

Across the Mountains is designed to help parents understand what urban life is like for their children and the problems and struggles they face every day. It also seeks to give youth an understanding of what traditional Native American values offer to them, even in an urban environment. It offers pride in their history and tradition and uniquely Native American solutions to many dilemmas facing modern families.
