The best cure for Diabetes is prevention. The time to address the potential for Diabetes is long before it has become a full-blown condition. To this end we now offer a Pre-Diabetes Class that meets once a month. Your doctor will refer you to the short, one time class. This class takes two hours. The first hour is devoted to Diabetes education and is taught by our registered nurse. Topics covered include lifestyle choices that contribute to Diabetes, differences between Type I and Type II Diabetes, how Diabetes affects your body and heart, potential long-term consequences, and how to make changes to prevent Diabetes onset. BRAID — Being Responsible American Indians with Diabetes BRAID is an intensive four-session education program in which patients learn about Diabetes and heart disease. This program is implemented with a team approach. Because of the high caliber of OKCICs team and the proven results of the program, BRAID is proud to have achieved recognition from Indian Health Services as an Integrated Diabetes Education Recognition Program (IDERP). BRAID is open to patients and their families with a doctor’s referral. There are four intensive three-hour long sessions, which can be completed in as little as a month or up to a year. Our next BRAID meeting is Tuesday February 9, 2010. Registration begins at 5:00 p.m. in the Clinic lobby. The topic is Diabetes and Heart Health. Our guest speaker is University of Oklahoma Cardiologist Mazen Abu-Fadel, MD, FACC. Get Set Program We at OKCIC are particularly proud of our Get SET program. This interdisciplinary program takes a team approach to improving the health of our clients who have either Type I Diabetes, Type II Diabetes, or clinical obesity. The program is open to OKCIC members with a doctor’s referral. In Get SET we emphasize exercise and nutritional behavior changes. Get SET has an enviable success rate. Of those clients who completed the entire 12 weeks, 100% had a reduced waist circumference, while almost all improved their lab test scores. Our health and fitness coordinators point out that many patients improve so dramatically during this program, many are able to stop taking medications or insulin altogether. Participants’ health can dramatically improve, if they are willing to work hard, follow the program, and make the nutritional changes the program supports.
