Get SET

An exercise and behavior program that involves getting Screening, Education and Treatment!

We at OKCIC are particularly proud of our Get SET program. This interdisciplinary program takes a team approach to improving the health of our clients who have either Type I Diabetes, Type II Diabetes or experience clinical obesity. The program is open to OKCIC members with a doctor’s referral.  At Get SET we emphasize exercise and nutritional behavior changes.

Get SET has an enviable success rate. Of those clients who completed the entire 12 week course, 100% had a reduced waist circumference, while almost all improved their lab test scores. OKCIC Health and Fitness Coordinators point out that many patients improve so dramatically during this program, many are able to stop taking medications or insulin. Participants’ health can dramatically improve, if they are willing to work hard, follow the program, and make the nutritional changes the program supports.

To take part, the patient must agree to exercise in the Fitness Center.  There, they are coached by a personal trainer at least three days a week for 30 minutes at a time, though many come in more frequently and stay longer. Clients also agree to attend three education classes on nutrition that are taught by a registered dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator.

At the beginning and end of the 12 weeks, clients receive a complete lab work-up, including fasting glucose.  OKCIC's staff also measure waist circumference (an important indicator of health) and weight.  Clinical test results show significant improvement for those who have followed the program.

While a gym setting may be intimidating to some, the OKCIC staff does their best to make everyone comfortable and happy. For our trainers, counselors and educators, it is all about encouragement and positive reinforcement.  It’s also about promoting the health of our Native community so we can all live long, productive lives.
