Simply put, public health nursing is the integration of nursing practice and public health practice applied to the prevention of disease and the promotion and preservation of the health of the Indian Population. Their work is continuous and comprehensive and includes all Native peoples served by OKCIC. Public health nursing is directed to individuals, families and groups, but in the end, the goal is to improve the health of the total Indian community. For those who cannot travel easily or need more extensive assistance in the home, OKCIC's public health nurses are a blessing. Their services for children include: Home Visits: Follow up per provider referral. The public health staff will go to a patients’ home and provide nursing services, which include but are not limited to: dressing changes, wound assessment, education, help with a new medication, abnormal lab follow-up, home safety assessments and immunizations. School Visits: Health Education in area schools and immunizations to children. (Only given with parent’s written consent.) For more information about Home or School visits, please call the Public Health Department at (405) 948-4900 ext. 167, or click here.
