Moccasin Movers, Elderly Exercise Outreach
Moccasin Movers

An exercise program for elders, conducted at locations throughout Oklahoma City.

“So many people, especially the elderly, really just need to get up and get moving,” said Steve Daugherty, HP/DP and Fitness Coordinator at OKCIC. “Exercise can make all the difference. I have myself have seen so many success stories, from people who could barely walk or needed to use walkers, to being able to walk with merely a cane or unaided at all. I remember one woman who couldn’t walk for four minutes on her first day and now she can do an hour.”

Steve is committed to reaching out to the people of our community, so he doesn’t always wait for the clients to come to him in the Wellness Center. He goes out into the community and offers fitness classes for elders in a variety of locations. Currently he offers training at the Salvation Army Native American Citadel Center, on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 AM.

Two years ago, when he began this program, many of the clients exercised in chairs. They began with simple movements, working on strength, flexibility and endurance. By the end of the 12 weeks, all had graduated to standing and walking exercise. The 12 week sessions also test for blood pressure and fitness with a 50 ft. speed walk. All participants show significant gains.

To keep the program interesting, it is varied depending on the fitness and interest level of the group. Sometimes the exercise is in chairs, sometimes it emphasizes walking, at other times they practice low-impact aerobics or Tai Chi. Occasionally Steve brings in guest speakers on topics regarding health and wellness.
