Procedures for Ultrasound Diagnostics

Proper preparation for ultrasound diagnostics is critical. Please follow your doctor’s guidelines carefully. While some tests don’t require any advance preparation, others cannot be performed if you have not followed the guidelines. Failure to do so will result in rescheduling and delay.

Please be at the clinic 30 minutes before your scheduled test. Check-in at the clinic registration desk, then proceed to the radiology department.

For an obstetric (OB), pelvic or transvaginal and renal ultrasound; the patient must drink 32 oz. of water one hour before the exam. You will feel you are uncomfortable, but your bladder MUST be full to get good images. We cannot perform your ultrasound if your bladder is not full. As difficult as it may be, please follow the guidelines and do NOT empty your bladder before test.

For gallbladder, liver, abdominal aorta, spleen, pancreas, or complete abdomen don’t eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your appointment. Have a light dinner, such as a sandwich and soup the night before your exam. Do not chew gum, smoke, or use any tobacco after midnight.

If you have a question about what procedures you will need to follow before your visit to Radiology, please consult you physician or call our department at (405) 948-4900, ext. 217 for more details.
