| Tuberculosis Care and Management | ||
Tuberculosis affects the lungs. Healthy people are generally resistant, but it can be highly contagious for the very young, the elderly and those who have other respiratory ailments. TB is usually curable with antibiotics, but far better than treating the illness once it has struck, is stopping its spread. For this reason all school children are tested for TB annually. An injection test is administered and the results are read within 24 to 48 hours. A small rash at the site of the injection is an indication of exposure to TB. Because of the overall good health of our local Native American population, results are negative 93% of the time. Though it may seem low, we want to maintain good health for our children, elderly and community. If we continue to test often, TB cannot establish a foothold among us. The best cure is always prevention. Patients who test positive will be referred to the appropriate doctor for further testing and treatment. Treatment most commonly consists of a round of antibiotics. OKCIC will also work with you to maintain your TB, as well as provide education on ways to prevent the spread of this disease. Through proper, consistent testing and treatment, we seek to control and some day, eliminate tuberculosis from our people. While we wait for that time, we must find and cure TB, for the good health of our community. To be tested or treated for TB, please call (405) 948-4900, ext. 167 for more information.
