Turtle Camp is short for Teaching Urbans Roads to Lifestyle and Exercise and is a program where kids 7 to 12 years old come together to learn about healthy living and exercise. Turtle Camp is funded with grants and private donations and is proudly administered by staff and community volunteers.

Children who attend the Camp have a great time playing with friends and learning the basics of healthy living.  They get to try new tasty and healthy foods at the Camp and learn more about why nutrition is so important to their health. Children also participate in many physical activities and learn the why regular exercise is a necessary part of a wholesome life.

Six months after the camp is held, children and their families are invited to a big reunion party. At the party we offer more information to the children and their parents on healthy living for the entire family unit. We also follow-up to see if the information provided at Turtle Camp has improved behavior and overall health.

The Camp is offered free, 6 times each year during spring break, summer vacation and fall break. It is held at different locations in Oklahoma City, including Camp DaKaNi, Lighthouse Fitness Gym and at local Indian Churches.

To participate, children’s parents must agree to have their children’s height, weight and blood pressure measured.  They also answer surveys about health (pre and post program) to ascertain if the program has made an impact in critical areas.
